This internship is located in the Center for Historic Buildings in GSA’s Office of the Chief Architect, Public Buildings Service. The role of the Center for Historic Buildings is to promote sound and innovative practices for maintaining the viability and integrity of historic buildings GSA owns, leases, and has an opportunity to acquire.
The National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE) Internship Program is a partnership with the National Park Service and other Federal agencies with cultural resource protection and public land management responsibilities. Its purpose is to accomplish needed and important work on federally protected lands while providing program participants with professional experience in their chosen fields. Interns work under the guidance of experienced staff to complete projects or undertake programs in furtherance of the agency’s mission.
To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 35 if a veteran) when starting the internship, a college student or recent graduate (within the past 12 months at the time of application), enrolled in a degree-seeking program, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
The GSA’s Center for Historic Buildings undertakes historic building documentation and interpretation efforts supporting the stewardship of historic buildings leaving the federal inventory.
The Historic Preservation Specialist Intern will assist the Center in coordinating activities and initiatives to maintain the functionality, integrity, and economic viability of 455 public buildings controlled by GSA. Projects include activities supporting GSA compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and the development of technical guidelines to preserve historic materials and historic character. Such activities may include coordinating with preservation specialists in educational, non-profit, and public institutions outside of GSA to exchange preservation solutions and learn about new initiatives.
Two 400-hour interns will be hired for the summer, with work completed by the end of September. Remote or hybrid work is an option.
Candidates will be asked to provide a writing sample if they are selected for an interview. The position requires a security clearance.
All NCPE interns accrue 4 hours of PTO for every 80 hours worked.
