The NPS archives program is part of the Museum Management Program within the Washington (D.C.) Support Office and provides guidance and assistance to park archives throughout the Service.
The Museum Management Program (MMP) is part of the National Center for Cultural Resources Stewardship and Partnership Programs that provides national program support functions for park resources and advises on policy. MMP supports the development and coordination of NPS-wide policies, standards, and procedures for managing museum collections, including natural, cultural, archival, and manuscript materials. MMP provides staff advice, technical assistance, and professional development pertaining to museum collections acquisition, documentation, preservation, protection, use, and disposal for the National Park Service (NPS).
The Archives Access & Education Intern will assist with several projects to increase access to NPS archival collections and develop educational resources for park staff managing archives collections. The work will include drafting LibGuide-style training guides on archives-related topics, assisting with the development of an Encoded Archival Description (EAD) template, and helping with a controlled vocabulary clean-up.
The intern will be supervised by the NPS Bureau Archivist and will be an integral part of the Museum Management Program and participate in team meetings and other activities, as schedules allow.
The preferred work schedule is a minimum of 15 hours per week. The hours are flexible to be determined in consultation with the supervisor. This is a remote position.
This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicants must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when they begin the internship. Qualified NCPE interns who complete their internships may count their position towards earning a Public Land Corps (PLC) Non-Competitive Hiring Authority certificate.
