  • Job Qualifications:

    Undergraduate or graduate degree in Museum Studies or related field is required (degree may be in progress). Applicant must have experience in object photography and using a DSLR camera. Work requires close attention to detail, strong writing ability, computer skills, and organizational skills. Ability to work independently, an interest in museum education, and an enjoyment of creating order from disorder will be considered a plus.

Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship

For more than 200 years, the National Mall has symbolized our nation and its democratic values, which have inspired the world. The National Mall - the great swath of green in the middle of our capital city and stretching from the foot of the United States Capitol to the Potomac River - is the premiere civic and symbolic space in our nation. National Mall and Memorial Parks protects the national mall and its iconic monuments and memorials and over 1,000 acres of greenspace in Washington, D.C..

The intern will work directly with the National Mall and Memorial Parks (NAMA) Museum Curator to meet National Park Service (NPS) curation standards for managing museum collections. The intern will be responsible for a variety of projects including processing and cataloging museum collections, receiving training on the Museum Collection Management System, reconciling accession, and cataloging data, photographing objects, and conducting museum inventories. Other duties include re-housing museum records and archival materials, fulfilling research requests when available, assisting curatorial staff in regular housekeeping and environmental monitoring, and other projects as assigned. The collection is made up of archeology, history, and natural history objects from various sites and memorials in Washington, DC. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or graduate student with a background in museum studies or collections management.

Work will be conducted primarily at the Museum Resource Center in Landover, MD, with some projects in Washington, DC. A housing and travel stipend will be provided. Some work may be performed remotely.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. The successful applicants must be 30 years of age or younger (or 35 years or younger if a Veteran) when they begin the internship.
