Website National Park Service/NCPE Internship Program
The National Park Service (NPS) Park History program administers the American World War II Heritage Cities designation program, which has so far designated 30 heritage cities, and will begin review of 2024 nominations after May 31. This public history internship will focus on outreach and communications to support the designated heritage cities, increase awareness of NPS resources and programs that support preservation and heritage tourism, and build connections between World War II home front places, themes, and stories through digital content. Projects may include assisting with orientation, networking, and educational events for designated heritage cities; working on digital projects to expand awareness of heritage cities’ home front history through the program website, World War II subject site, or partner platforms; and developing outreach contacts and communications for the 2025 nomination round.
The intern will work during the fall 2024 and winter 2025 under the supervision of the Bureau Historian & World War II Heritage Cities National Coordinator, and will work closely with additional NPS and partner historians responsible for administering the Heritage Cities program. The intern will also learn about the Park History program’s multiple other programs that support history in the parks and among partner organizations, participate in daily program operations, and have opportunities to explore and learn about the wider scope of NPS public history, cultural resource management, and historic preservation programs and career paths.
Please note: this internship is remote, full-time for 1200 hours, beginning in September 2024 and ending in February/March 2025 (depending on specific dates worked). This is not a part-time or summer internship.
