  • Job Summary: Help the regional National Historic Landmarks (NHL) Program update documentation and evaluation of Revolutionary-War-era NHLs as part of the National Park Service’s 250th commemoration initiative.
  • Job Qualifications:

    Minimum of 35 year(s) of experience OR a MA/MS Degree in History, Historic Preservation, Archeology, Anthropology, Architectural History, Public History, or related field with a minimum additional experience of 15 year(s) in preparation of National Register and/or National Historic Landmark nominations and documentation of historic sites, structures, districts, or buildings using photography, mapping, and place-based historical research and evaluation methods. Experience developing historical contexts, identifying related historic properties, and evaluating levels and areas of significance using the National Park Service’s National Register and/or National Historic Landmark guidelines.

    Extensive knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act and registration criteria and processes for listing properties in the National Register of Historic Places and/or National Historic Landmarks.

    Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint

  • Physical Demands / Work Environment: Two to three trips of 2-3 days to the NHL sites to conduct research and complete field documentation (photography, notes, mapping). In addition, enrollee may be required to complete archival research at a variety of repositories expected to be located in Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland and other Mid-Atlantic archives or libraries.Work is primarily sedentary and performed at a computer and in archives or libraries. May be required to travel to repositories and visit remote sites which require walking or driving over rough, uneven surfaces. NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the National Park Service (NPS). These experienced professionals provide administrative expertise, facilities management, natural and cultural resource planning, and a broad array of other professional skills that support the National Park Service through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).

Assist the National Capital Region’s NHL Program update its NHL documentation for Revolutionary-War-era designated properties. This will advance the NHL Program’s and the National Park Service’s 250th Commemoration goals by updating, correcting, and expanding the histories that are enshrined in our nation’s National Historic Landmarks.

  • Plan and conduct historical research for planning documents, including research designs, National Historic Landmark nominations, and interpretive tools 20%
    Prepare historic property documentation, specifically to updated National Historic Landmark nominations. 20%
  • Recommend, plan for, and execute historical investigations required to meet National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Park Service (NPS) guidelines, and the research needs of the program. 20%
  • Consult with cultural resources professionals, historians, and community representatives to keep informed of new developments, research, etc. Evaluate pertinent professional literature and provide recommendations to management. 20%
  • Write research studies, reports, and evaluations in manuscript format at a level acceptable for professional publications. Writing skills should express thoughts and present data clearly and develop ideas in logical sequence applying professional techniques and methods of the history discipline. 20%
