Whiskeytown Natural Recreation Area (NRA) – Cultural Resource Management is seeking a candidate to assist with the preservation of an historic orchard and historic landscape vegetation within the Tower House Historic District. Orchard varieties include heirloom apples, pears, quince, and walnut. Duties include watering and irrigation management, basic tree care, orchard and landscape floor maintenance, and pruning.

The intern will work with local horticulturalists, volunteers, park staff, and National Park Service (NPS) horticultural and landscape specialists to preserve and maintain existing trees for summer/fall 2024. This position will be working in tandem with a NPS Biological Technician tasked with invasive species treatment within the historic district.  The successful applicant will also assist in the annual apple and pear harvest to support the annual Harvest Festival held in September. A background in historic landscape architecture or horticulture/arboriculture is preferred. The entire internship will be spent in the park. While housing is not available for this position, the park will assist the candidate to find housing options.

This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE). The program is a partnership between the National Park Service and NCPE. Eligibility requirements apply; visit https://preservenet.org/ncpe-internships/ for details and instructions on how to apply.
