    To Qualify:
    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    -Master’s degree from an accredited university in history, architectural history, historic preservation, art history, archaeology, anthropology, cultural geography or related field and two years of professional experience performing historic preservation work in archaeology, architectural history, history, or planning; OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in history, architectural history, historic preservation, art history, archaeology, anthropology, cultural geography or closely related field and three years of professional experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Historic Preservation Specialist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

    Special Notes
    Applicants’ professional qualifications must meet National Park Service standards as described in the Code of Federal Regulations for an Architectural Historian as described in 36 CFR 61.

    Special Requirements
    ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY: Per 36CFR61 positions in the Architectural History discipline require a Master’s degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or a closely related field, with course work in American architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or a closely related field; or a bachelor’s degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field plus one of the following: (1) at least 2 years of full-time experience in research, writing or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; or (2) substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American architectural history. These positions will be identified at the time of recruitment.

    Additional Position Criteria
    -This position requires applicants to attach a writing sample that applies the Standards for Rehabilitation to a historic building project.
    -Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for an Architectural Historian is required.
    -Experience with managing federal and state funded grants for historic preservation projects are required.
    -Experience with the SHPO program areas that this position will manage including: National Register of Historic Places, Nevada State Register of Historic Places, Certified Local Governments, Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) subgrants, Commission for Cultural Centers and Historic Preservation (CCCHP) grant program, and covenants is required.
    -Professional experience in the review of projects meeting The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties is required.

Nevada State Historic Preservation Office

The Nevada State Historic Preservation Office has created a new supervisory position in architectural history. The SOI-qualified chief Architectural Historian will oversee two grant programs (HPF, CCCHP), the National and State Register programs, the Certified Local Government program, and federal historic preservation tax incentives program. In that role, the supervisor will conduct and manage architectural reviews of both construction projects and preservation covenants to ensure consistency with the SOI Rehab Standards, as well as guide register nominations to listing; while working collaboratively with Nevada’s communities.

The Nevada SHPO has stable funding, new leadership, and is expanding. We are seeking experienced and inspired individuals who are willing to join a positive and forward-looking team, as we implement new processes and perspectives.  The position is located in Carson City, Nevada, within the beautiful Reno-Tahoe region.
