Website Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission

The Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission is the state agency for historical preservation and heritage programs. The Commission operates a statewide historical preservation program that identifies and protects historic buildings, districts, structures, and archaeological sites. The Commission also develops and carries out programs to document and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Rhode Island's people.

The Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission (RIHPHC) is seeking a preservation consultant to:

  • Complete a statewide survey of sites associated with the pre-20th-century struggle for African American civil rights in Rhode Island,
  • Prepare a National Register of Historic Places Multiple Property Documentation Form (MPDF) for the theme “African American Civil Rights in Rhode Island” and
  • Prepare individual National Register of Historic Places Registration Forms for four related properties.

The MPDF and the Registration Forms constitute a Multiple Property Submission (MPS). This project will build off and expand upon the RIHPHC’s statewide survey of 20th-century African American civil rights sites, completed in 2019 in partnership with the Rhode Island Historical Society and the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society.
