  • Job Summary: Conservator of Architecture and Monuments based in our Miami, FL studio. This permanent, full-time staff position will be responsible for the conservation of historic buildings and monumental sculpture.
  • Job Qualifications:

    Applicants must have a master’s degree from a recognized graduate program in historic preservation or conservation. A minimum of 2 – 5 years of post-graduation experience in historic preservation is preferred, though new professionals with less experience will be considered for exceptional abilities. The majority of work for this position will be in Florida, though RLA staff do work throughout the United States and Caribbean. As such, travel to and outside of these regions will be required depending on project need.
    Demonstrable skill and ability to prioritize and work independently as well as in collaboration with other team members and outside contractors to meet deadlines on multiple projects is essential. A broad knowledge of materials, architectural history, art, as well as documentation and research techniques is expected.  Familiarity with specifying treatments (particularly of metals, masonry, and finishes) is desired, as is experience with supervision or mentoring of conservation staff.
    Upon hiring, the conservator should possess a wide range of hand skills and the ability to perform physical tasks in a range of outdoor climates/settings. The following is required:

    ·       Strong project management, communication, and organizational skills.

    ·       Demonstrated ability to carry out hands-on conservation treatments and field work. Treatment practice and documentation must be of an exceptionally high standard.

    ·       Excellent written skills in English and ability to compose detailed reports. Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

    ·       General manual dexterity and hand-tool skills.

    ·       Willingness and physical ability to engage in on-site work that may include overhead or ground-level tasks.

    ·       Knowledge of masonry testing.

    ·       Ability to patch/repair and stabilize masonry.

    ·       Working independently, as well as part of a cohesive team in a fast-paced environment.

    ·       Proficiency for MS Word, Adobe, PowerPoint, Excel. Experience with AutoCAD, and Adobe InDesign/Illustrator software preferred, but not required.

    ·       Ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, and aerial platforms at heights.

    ·       Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

    ·       Medically fit to use respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment.

    ·       Overnight work and travel are required as part of this position and may be out of state. Duration of travel is typically one week per month, though some projects may occasionally require longer periods of travel, not to exceed two weeks at a time per month unless agreed upon by the staff member.

    ·       Ability to pass government background checks and/or drug screenings based on our client’s requirements.

    ·       A valid driver license and car (mileage is reimbursed at the annual GSA rate)

    ·       U.S. citizenship or valid work permit.

Work responsibilities will include on-site assessments of architectural elements and monuments, field testing, conservation treatments, research, report writing, photographic documentation, project estimation and monitoring, quality control of work of contractors on active construction sites, communication with project teams and other architectural and engineering disciplines.
