  • Job Summary: The Senior Archaeologist is a supervisory position responsible for coordinating the Archaeology side of the Environmental Review Program within the Georgia Historic Preservation Division’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
  • Job Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    A candidate must:

    Meet the minimum requirements defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, 36 CFR part 61 for qualified archaeologist. The minimum professional qualifications in archeology are a graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field plus:

    o At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration, or management.

    o At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology, and

    o Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion

    A candidate must have:

    • Experience with evaluating archaeological resources for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

    • Experience completing archaeological reports and projects such as archaeological resource surveys, testing, data recovery reports.

    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other cultural resource professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the public both orally and in writing.

    • Familiarity with and ability to comprehend and apply complex theoretical considerations and new developments in the technical literature of archeology and related scientific disciplines.

    • Knowledge of the pre and post contact cultures, history and archaeology of Southeastern US Region demonstrated through experience, education and/or research.

    • Demonstrated leadership and/or management experience.

    • Experience working within archaeological professional standards and practices, such as the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Archeological Documentation.

    • An interest in, and a sensitivity to, tribal issues and concerns. Respect for tribal perspectives and beliefs. Diplomacy in dealing with complex situations requiring patience and active listening skills with intent to learn and understand.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following qualifications:

    • Experience supervising and leading staff in a professional consulting, academic, or government agency environment (e.g., create work plans for staff, hire and train staff, evaluate staff performance, establishing daily goals and tasks, overseeing employment functions, managing a broad range of multiple work assignments, or comparable activities).

    • Demonstrated experience working with tribal communities and/or Tribal Historic Preservation Offices.

    • Participation in consultation with federal and state agencies, tribal governments, and other Interested parties.

    • Participation in review and negotiations of agreement documents for federal cultural resources programs and projects.

    • Demonstrated technical review of cultural resources survey, testing, excavation, treatment plans, and reports for federal and state agency projects.

    • Experience evaluating research designs against current archaeological method and theory and the adequacy of the scientific approach to obtain information potential

The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) is Georgia’s state historic preservation office (SHPO), as established by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. HPD has several key functions as part of the national historic preservation program. First, through the Section 106 compliance program, HPD is a required consulting party in federal undertakings, helping to ensure that they respect our most important historic resources. Second, we administer various economic development programs that leverage private capital to encourage business growth, especially in our many smaller towns and communities. Finally, through programs like the National Register of Historic Places, Certified Local Governments, and others, we work with partners both inside and outside state government to encourage regional and local planning, neighborhood conservation, downtown revitalization, heritage tourism, and archaeological site protection.

Primary Duties include:

• Oversee the review and documentation of federal and state projects under current preservation laws and to assess impacts to archaeological resources to ensure they are given due consideration during planning and implementation of projects.

• Consult with federal and state agencies, federally recognized tribal partners, and other interested parties on archaeological and cultural resource eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and any effects that may occur to archaeological resources because of project or program implementation.

• Formulate and provide written recommendations to agencies establishing the SHPO’s opinion of appropriate mitigation measures for archaeological resources that will be adversely affected by a federal undertaking or state projects.

• Assists federal and state agencies, Tribal Historic Preservation Officers, as well as other preservation partners, in efforts to resolve complex problems related to the protection and preservation of archaeological resources and associated archaeological materials.

• Determine staffing needs of the program and effectively allocate resources to achieve goals and objectives.

• Assign activities and projects to staff and ensure that statutory deadlines and quality standards are met.

• Oversee the review of nominations to the National Register of Historic Places for properties with archaeological significance. Provide information as needed to facilitate the listing of archaeological properties to the National Register.

• Participate in statewide cultural resources planning with federal, state, and tribal partners.

• Prepare and deliver content for workshops, webinars, videos, publications, etc. as needed concerning archaeological resources and the functions of the GA SHPO to educate the public and the GA SHPO’s partners.

• Organize, analyze, and synthesize data and information and draft guidance related to archaeological resources for use by the public and professional archaeologists.

    All NCPE interns received an hourly stipend, the rate is listed at each position description. Additionally, interns receive paid time off (PTO), paid Federal holidays if working full-time, and access to NCPE's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for career and personal counseling, coaching, and referrals. Project sites may also offer a housing allowance and/or commuting stipend; this information is also listed in the description or offered during the interview.

    As an organization operating under Public Land Corps Act (PLC) authority, many NCPE positions qualify the intern for Federal Hiring Preference if (1) they complete a minimum of 640 hours at one or more qualifying conservation project(s); (2) are between the ages of 16 and 30 years (35 if a veteran); and (3) apply for a Federal position at USAJOBS with PLC noted in the announcement within two years of completing the internship.     To be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking academic program or recently graduated (within the past 12 months) and be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. Interns are not eligible to work more than 1200 hours total in the program; previous interns must stay within this overall limit. The length of an internship can vary from 10 to 30 weeks if full time (40 hours per week) or longer if on a part-time schedule. If selected, the exact starting date will be determined by you and the NPS supervisor. The stipend rate is $17.00 per hour unless otherwise listed.

    The successful candidate is responsible for finding and paying for travel to and housing at the internship location; some exceptions apply. The supervising office may be able to assist in locating housing but it is ultimately up to the individual accepting the internship to find accommodation.

    The National Council requires all interns working in-person at Federal facilities and/or with Federal employees receive the Covid-19 vaccination. Please be advised that you may also be required to wear a mask, depending on the protocols adopted by your work site. Also be aware that, due to Government-wide security requirements, a background check will be required if you are selected for a position.
