The NRI research team supports the DOD on various installations through conservation program support and management to ensure compliance with Army Regulation 200-1 (Environmental Protection and Enhancement), Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan (ICRMP), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Native American Graves Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Executive Orders (EOs), and other federal or state requirements. The desired individual must have strong organization and problem-solving skills, and have a desire to complete projects accurately, on time, and in a professional manner. The ideal candidate will provide ongoing assistance of the Fort Irwin Curation Facility. This will include annual inventory reports and memos, updates to the existing Cultural Resource Management Plan (ICRMP), regular monitoring for damaging conditions, and other work as needed under 36 CFR 79. Personnel shall be qualified museum professional in accordance with 36 CFR 79.9[4} and will be located on site. The selected individual will work with clients and staff on all levels, including DoD personnel, contractors, research faculty, and TAMU-NRI partners, thus excellent interpersonal skills are a must.
Collection Management:
Candidate must be a Qualified Museum Professional as set out in 36 CFR 79
- Directing the collection, registration, documentation, cataloging, inventorying, and physical care of artifacts and associated records in accordance with federal regulations and professional best practices.
- Overseeing the maintenance and proper storage of collections, including ensuring appropriate methods, containers, environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light, pollutants), and physical security.
- Conducting periodic inspections and inventories to monitor collection condition and identify preservation needs.
- Managing the process of deaccessioning and disposition of certain material remains when appropriate, following established procedures and regulations.
- Ensuring compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) when applicable.
- Preparing reports and administrative records related to collection management, use, and disposition.
- Maintaining records of acquisitions, inventories, conservation treatments, and other activities impacting the collections.
Interpreting archaeological data and findings for various audiences through reports, publications, and presentations. - Collaborating with other professionals and the public to promote understanding of archaeology and its significance.
Research Assistance:
- Support field surveys, excavations, monitoring and documentation of archaeological sites and artifacts.
- Support development of comprehensive reports, briefings, papers, and other materials.
- Working with other researchers, specialists, stakeholders, and the public to share research findings and promote cultural heritage awareness.
