  • Job Summary: The Volunteer Coordinator & Historical Interpreter recruits, trains, & schedules volunteers, leads tours, and assists with site operations. This role ensures visitor engagement, safety, & smooth daily function while preserving the history of TILH&M.
  • Job Qualifications:
    • Must be able to climb the lighthouse tower.
    • Strong teamwork skills and ability to collaborate effectively.
    • Proficiency in computer applications, including scheduling software and basic administrative tools.
    • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
    • Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, and rain.

The Mission of the Tybee Island Historical Society is to preserve, develop, and promote the historic resources and legacy of Tybee Island to the benefit of our community, future generations, and nation as a whole by: Restoring, interpreting, preserving, maintaining, and effectively operating the Tybee Island Light Station, Museum, and all ancillary sites and exhibits; Collecting, preserving, storing, and exhibiting artifacts, documents, photographs, digital records, and images and other archival materials relevant to the cultural, military, maritime, and architectural heritage of Tybee Island; and working with and providing expertise to the City of Tybee Island and community organizations to preserve and promote Tybee’s historic legacy.

Volunteer Coordinator & Historical Interpreter

Tybee Island Light Station & Museum

Reports to: Executive Director & Director of Operations
Location: Tybee Island Light Station & Museum, 30 Meddin Drive, Tybee Island, GA 31328
Position Type: Full-Time, Hourly Staff
Schedule: Wednesday–Sunday, 8:30 AM–4:30 PM (Weekends Required)
Compensation: $19.50/hour

  • Maintain an organized and efficient volunteer schedule to ensure adequate docent coverage.
  • Develop knowledge of the Tybee Island Historical Society, Light Station & Museum, and its history.
  • Recruit, train, and retain volunteers, providing necessary orientation and materials.
  • Supervise community service workers, including scheduling, monitoring, and required documentation.
  • Provide monthly reports on volunteer activities to the designated Board Member.
  • Conduct daily site inspections, including climbing the lighthouse, to ensure safety and enforce visitor rules.
  • Support the Director of Programming & Membership (DPM) with tours, educational programs, scheduling, and payments.
  • Assist with after-hours events as needed.
  • Answer phones and help maintain a clean, organized, and visitor-friendly site.
  • Interact with visitors, answer questions, and enhance the overall guest experience.
  • Open and close the site as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Director of Operations.
