Job Qualifications:The successful applicant will demonstrate knowledge of and experience implementing the provisions of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) with all NAGPRA mandates as required by the NAGPRA regulations, working in partnership with the DHR NAGPRA Task Force.
Knowledge of the federal NAGPRA at 25 U.S.C. 3001-13, and its accompanying regulations at 43 C.F.R.10.1-17 is required. Successful candidates are experienced with the documentation, disposition, and repatriation of ancestral remains and NAGPRA-eligible associated funerary objects, unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, or objects of cultural patrimony and documents, including, but not limited to: maintaining all records of outreach, notification, consultation and other correspondence; tracking responses and preparing status reports; developing documents to facilitate consultations; and submitting and updating federal reports and notices.
Experience in developing and maintaining strong relationships and open lines of communication with Native American Tribes, federal and state agencies, archaeological consultants, and other entities for NAGPRA compliance and/or repatriation issues and actions.
Experience with establishing and maintaining a database system to identify, document and catalog specific mate-rials such as human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony.
Applicants must have experience demonstrating the ability to research, interpret and apply state and agency policies to reach accurate conclusions.
Applicants must have experience demonstrating attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills are required.
The desired applicant will display the ability to set priorities, effectively organize work, work independently, and manage multiple tasks and activities while meeting deadlines. The selected candidate will be required to complete a criminal background check as a condition of employment.
