  • Job Summary: The Department of Historic Resources is seeking an experienced professional to serve as the Director of its Review and Compliance Division, overseeing the agency’s timely review of state and federal projects within the framework of established state
  • Job Qualifications:

    The successful applicant will demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of preservation law, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and 36 CFR Part 800, and other applicable state and federal laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines.  Successful candidates must be familiar with the full range of Virginia’s historic resources and with the roles and responsibilities of the State Historic Preservation Office and its programs.  Experience demonstrating the ability to apply technical, legal and cultural knowledge and planning principles to complex projects; communicate effectively orally and in writing; manage time; provide technical assistance; and work proficiently in a digital environment.

    The successful applicant has experience demonstrating interpersonal and conflict management skills to negotiate, mediate, and collaborate with a wide variety of individuals and partners on sensitive and complex issues. Experience demonstrating strong budgeting and personnel management skills and the ability to plan, direct, and supervise the work of a professional staff.  The successful applicant has experience developing internal policies and procedures for improving coordination of processes and keep staff informed of management goals and objectives, revised procedures, methods, and work changes.

    Successful candidates are required to meet the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in History, Architecture, Architectural History or Archaeology through an advanced degree in archaeology, anthropology, history, architecture, architectural history or a closely- related field.

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) is the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in Virginia. As the SHPO, DHR administers a number of federal preservation programs. DHR is also a state agency in the Natural and Historic Resources Secretariat. DHR fosters, encourages, and supports the stewardship and use of Virginia’s significant architectural, archaeological, and historic resources as valuable assets for the economic, educational, social, and cultural benefit of citizens and communities. This position manages the recruitment and performance of six full time review staff with the goal of attracting and retaining highly qualified and experienced preservation professionals and supporting their professional development.  This Division Director is responsible for creating and strengthening agency partnerships with external stakeholders, including sovereign nations and tribes, federal, state, and local agencies, non-governmental organizations, and communities.  This position also maintains an active role in the review of individual projects, including those that are extraordinarily complex or controversial.

This position works collaboratively with senior leadership to develop and implement DHR’s annual budget and comprehensive and strategic plans, and evaluate and shape preservation public policy including legislation, regulations, and procedures to support the goals of the Review and Compliance Division and the priorities of the agency and the Commonwealth.
