The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) is the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in Virginia. As the SHPO, DHR administers a number of federal preservation programs. DHR is also a state agency in the Natural and Historic Resources Secretariat. DHR fosters, encourages, and supports the stewardship and use of Virginia’s significant architectural, archaeological, and historic resources as valuable assets for the economic, educational, social, and cultural benefit of citizens and communities. This position manages the recruitment and performance of six full time review staff with the goal of attracting and retaining highly qualified and experienced preservation professionals and supporting their professional development. This Division Director is responsible for creating and strengthening agency partnerships with external stakeholders, including sovereign nations and tribes, federal, state, and local agencies, non-governmental organizations, and communities. This position also maintains an active role in the review of individual projects, including those that are extraordinarily complex or controversial.
This position works collaboratively with senior leadership to develop and implement DHR’s annual budget and comprehensive and strategic plans, and evaluate and shape preservation public policy including legislation, regulations, and procedures to support the goals of the Review and Compliance Division and the priorities of the agency and the Commonwealth.
