  • Job Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s degree with a major in Historic Preservation, Urban Planning, or a closely related field (education will be verified using the “Education Requirements” listed below) and one (1) year of experience in historic preservation is required, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

    Some graduate level coursework in Historic Preservation or a related field is highly desirable.

    A current and valid Florida driver’s license is required. For application purposes, a valid driver’s license from any state (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized; with the ability to obtain the State of Florida driver’s license within thirty (30) days from date of employment.

     

    Education Requirements: To be considered valid (or verified) for position qualification purposes, and consistent with City Hiring Policy 4-5, a High School, GED or equivalent diploma, and all higher education degrees or certifications must have been issued by:

    a)    a public education institution in the State of Florida or any State or Territory of the United States; or

    b)    an institution accredited by an accrediting organization that is recognized by the Florida Department of Education or the U.S. Department of Education; or

    c)    an institution that is accredited by an organization that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); or

    d)    an institution whose degree or certification is accepted by institutions identified in either a), b), or c), above, for the purpose of admission to institutions identified in either a), b), or c) above.

     

    International degrees will be evaluated to determine if they satisfy qualification requirements.

Under limited direction, reviews and analyzes historic preservation requests. Prepares and presents recommendations to the Historic Preservation Board regarding historic preservation requests and assists the public and City personnel with issues related to Historic Preservation; and performs other related duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Which are not in any hierarchical order)

1. Prepares and presents recommendations to the Historic Preservation Board on requests to properties within a historic district or listed as an individual site in the West Palm Beach Register of Historic Places.

2. Provides technical expertise in historic preservation to the public and City personnel.

3. Reviews building permit applications for properties located within a historic district or listed as a historic site in the West Palm Beach Register of Historic Places for compliance with the Historic Preservation Ordinance.

4. Reviews demolition permit applications and Section 106 requests.

5. Administers the street signage program for historic districts.

6. Prepares nominations for a structure to be designated as a historic site, district or resurvey as needed.

7. Develops public education programs and programs to preserve the City’s historic resources.

8. Manages historic preservation case files and tracking systems.

9. Updates and maintains database and related maps of historic properties and districts.

10. Performs other related duties as assigned.
