The mission of the Department of Arts, Culture and History’s State Historic Preservation Office is to encourage, inform, support, and participate in the efforts of the people of West Virginia to identify, recognize, preserve and protect West Virginia’s prehistoric and historic structures, objects and sites.
The West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History/State Historic Preservation Office has an opportunity for an Archaeologist I to work under the supervision of the Senior Archaeologist to review proposed projects submitted by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, Office of Surface Mining, and other agencies for potential effects to archaeological resources and compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Duties include, but are not limited to, reviewing project specific information and cultural resource reports; preparing recommendations regarding the need for archaeological survey or other field work; and drafting letters referencing office comments regarding recommendations. Other duties include drafting memorandums of agreement (MOAs), scopes of work and/or other project related documents for acceptability; participating in project related meetings and/or field visits; assisting in maintaining related records such as archaeological site forms; assisting with educational activities such as presentations. Position performs other duties as assigned.
